IRB Required Training

It is Georgia Tech policy that all faculty, staff, and students who propose to conduct research with human subjects hold certification in training in the protections of human subjects. Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval for pending projects will be withheld until training has been verified by the Office of Research Compliance for all involved individuals. If individuals are to be added to a currently approved project, an amendment to the study must be submitted and approved by the IRB, and training certification received by the Office of Research Compliance before the individual engages in research involving human subjects.

The Georgia Tech Institutional Review Board has approved both of the following methods for satisfying the requirement for certification of training in human subject protections:

1. CITI Online Training Course Users should visit www.citiprogram.org to register for a user name and password. Once the required modules have been completed, the grade book should be checked to ensure that all modules have been completed. Users should complete the confirmation form and submit. The Georgia Tech Office of Research Compliance will receive from CITI electronic notification of completion; however; users should print and keep the completion report just in case verification is needed. 2. PSYC 2015 Research Methods or PSYC 6018 Principles of Research DesignCompletion by undergraduate students of the required undergraduate psychology course PSYC 2015 Research Methods, and completion by graduate students of the required graduate course PSYC 6018 Principles of Research Design are also options. These two courses provide in-depth exposure to research ethics, protections of human subjects, and the federal guidelines and regulations. A copy of the final grade report should be submitted to the Office of Research Compliance at Mail Code 0420.
